A REPUTATION AT RISK

What woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that’s who. She’s known Camden Rothermere since they were children-and she also knows she’d bring nothing but scandal to his name.

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can’t stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he’d finally gotten over.

The only way they’ll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they’re married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed-until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins . . .

THIS IS HISTORICAL ROMANCE AT ITS BEST!

WHAT A DUKE DARES is the third book in the marvellous ‘Sons of Sin’ series and, once again, Anna Campbell delivers an emotive, romantic and passionate love story.

How I imagine Cam….

When Camden (Cam) Rothermere, heir to a dukedom, proposes to his childhood friend, Penelope Thorne, he can’t believe his ears when she turns him down. Even his declaration that he esteems and admires her and enjoys her company does nothing to persuade her to change her mind. She refuses to marry for anything but love. Cam has seen first-hand the devastating effect love had on his parents:

“As a result of love, my father descended into cruelty and obsession and my mother became a byword for promiscuity.”

and it has no place in his life now or ever.

How I imagine Pen

Penelope (Pen) Thorne has loved her childhood friend, Camden Rothermere for as long as she can remember and, when he proposes, it should be the happiest day of her life…a girlish fantasy come true. The reality is very different because she knows that Cam can never give her the one thing she desires…his heart. If he truly loved her, she’d even be willing to curb her impulsive and headstrong ways to become the wife he needs…someone dignified and above reproach…someone to help him restore respectability to the scandal-ridden Rothermere name.

So they go their separate ways.

In the intervening nine years, Cam is now the powerful Duke of Sedgemoor, renowned for his cold demeanour, self-assurance and his iron control, devoting his life to restoring the family’s good name. Pen had fled England to travel the continent with her eccentric aunt and Cam was well aware of all her amorous intrigues over the years.

When he receives an urgent summons from his friend, Pen’s brother, Peter, Cam travels to Calais to find his friend with very little time to live and fearful for his sister’s safety. Cam is honour bound to fulfil the dying Peter’s request that Cam find her and bring her home to England.

Ms Campbell took me on an enthralling and emotional roller-coaster of a journey before Cam and Pen finally attain their hard-earned Happy Ever After. I enjoyed every moment…the antagonism and the simmering sexual tension; the temptation and the heady passion; the stark danger and the anguish; the scandal and the poignant emotions, the betrayal and the heartbreak; the tenderness and the enduring love.

I enjoyed the secondary romance between Pen’s brother, Harry and Sophie, the sister of Cam’s enemy, James Fairbrother, Marquess of Leath. Their sweet, tender romance forms a contrast to the hot, passionate one between Cam and Pen. It also precipitates events that cause Cam to finally admit his love for Pen.

The Marquess of Leath obviously loves his sister very much which was a point in his favour and, once he and Cam had settled their differences, I liked him even more. I look forward to reading his story in the next book in the series.

Jonas and Sidonie (Seven Nights in a Rogue’s Bed) and Richard and Genevieve (A Rake’s Midnight Kiss) all make an appearance and I love the banter between Cam, Richard and Jonas.

Call me a sentimental old fool but I love a good Epilogue and Ms Campbell made me go all misty-eyed when Cam gives Pen her special Christmas present.

Some Memorable Moments

“What in heaven’s name brought you to choose this hovel?”

One slender hand brushed her tumble of hair back from her face. To his dismay, he saw she was shaking.

“Try the weather.” Her tone was sharper than his sword. “I know you could barge through an avalanche without creasing your neckcloth, but we lesser mortals must seek shelter when snow blocks the roads.”

♥♥♥

For a second that extended into eternity, they regarded one another. He should leave. He had no right to absorb every glorious, forbidden detail and imprint it on his mind to remember forever.

♥♥♥

He’d burned to wrench his wife from her chair and muss her neat perfection. Then fling her across the polished table and do things likely to make the butler resign.

♥♥♥

“ Anyway, you know that even if you were off your head with opium or inclined to slobber into your dinner, chits would still line up for the duchess’s coronet.”

I’m thrilled to welcome the fabulous Anna Campbell to Rakes and Rascals today to delight readers with 5 Fun Facts about her new release WHAT A DUKE DARES, the third book in the Sons of Sin series.

Hi Carol! Thanks so much for having me as your guest today on Rakes and Rascals to talk about my new release WHAT A DUKE DARES which is out in Australia and North America today and in the U.K. in late October.

I loved writing this story – Cam and Pen are characters who lived with me for a long time so I was extremely happy to give them their happy ending. And there’s something fun about writing a duke, given his role as the historical king of the beasts!

So I thought today, I’d give you five fun facts about my latest release.

Fun Fact 1

This is book three in my Sons of Sin series (the other two are SEVEN NIGHTS IN A ROGUE’S BED and A RAKE’S MIDNIGHT KISS). My duke in the title is Camden Rothermere, the Duke of Sedgemoor. If you’ve read the other books, you know that Cam is Mr. Cool, the guy who always knows exactly what to do, the man who observes his friends love affairs with a slightly sardonic amusement. For me as both reader and writer, it’s so enjoyable to pull the rug out from under the man who thinks he’s got life sorted out and send him on a wild trip to chaos when he falls in love. For this particular author, seeing Cam battle with the unexpected power of his emotions was great fun.

Fun Fact 2

If any of you are regulars on my Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AnnaCampbellFans?ref=br_rs), you’ll notice people referring to my very dignified – well, at least he is at the start – duke as the DUDE! This stems from a horrible typo I discovered on one of my rounds of edits and which I shared because it cracked me up. Lord Hillbrook’s very haughty butler announces Cam as the Dude of Sedgemoor. I’m sure there’s a sequel on the way where Cam hangs 10 and says cowabunga every time he opens his mouth!

Fun Fact 3

Penelope Thorne, the heroine and Cam’s childhood bugbear, has spent the last nine years wandering around Europe in the company of an independent-minded aunt. Intrepid female travelers weren’t unknown in the Georgian era and the Regency so Pen’s scandalous adventures are based in fact. Women like Mary Wollstonecraft and Lady Mary Wortley Montague ranged far and wide, often through war zones. Mary Wollstonecraft, the mother of feminism, got as far as Sweden after living through the worst of the French Revolution, and Lady Mary Wortley Montague spent years in Turkey and wrote some terrifically entertaining reminiscences of her travels. A really enjoyable book about these brave, interesting women is LADIES OF THE GRAND TOUR by Brian Dolan.

Mary Wollstonecraft

Fun Fact 4

I’ve always loved the poem TARANTELLA by Hilaire Belloc (you can find it in full here: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/tarantella/). WHAT A DUKE DARES starts out as a road trip romance (most of it is set in London high society but it begins with a trip over the Italian Alps).

When I was writing the flea-bitten hostelries where our hero and heroine are forced to find shelter, I kept remembering these lines.

Do you remember an Inn,
Miranda?
Do you remember an Inn?
Of the straw for the bedding,
And fleas that tease in the High Pyrenees,
And the wine that tasted of tar?

As you can imagine, Cam is used to much better accommodations! The ratty inns gave me plenty of opportunities to write snappy dialogue between my hero and heroine. Always a fun bonus!

Fun Fact 5

Sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know! There’s a very eventful boat trip that results in scandal and a marriage of convenience. The problem is I’m not a sailor. Luckily, I have a very good friend, Australian author Helene Young (www.heleneyoung.com) who lives on a yacht. I set Helene the task of plotting the journey from Genoa to England and she came up trumps!

So let’s talk boat trips. Are you a sailor? Have you been on a long ocean voyage? If not, would you like to go on one? If so, where? I’ve got a signed print copy of WHAT A DUKE DARES for one commentor (open internationally) today so good luck!

WOW! I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Anna Campbell is known for her intense, emotional, passionate stories but A RAKE’S MIDNIGHT KISS is much lighter in tone. It reminded me of Loretta Chase’s books …romantic, sexy and funny…a winning combination. This book was pure joy to read from the first page to the last!

Oh, how I loved Richard and Genevieve! They were just the perfect match for each other and are definitely joining my list of all-time favourite Romancelandia couples.

Richard is such a wonderful romantic hero. He’s handsome, tender, kind, clever and brave. His devastating charm and sense of humour just add to his appeal. Richard may appear strong and sure of himself on the outside, but inside he is still vulnerable to the pain and humiliation of being a bastard.

I adore the prim, unworldly, intellectual Genevieve who dreams, not of a husband, but of the freedom to pursue her scholarly ambitions. I admire her devotion to her father although he is unworthy of it.

It was an unadulterated pleasure to share their eventful journey to a Happy Ever After. Experiencing…

Richard’s determined pursuit and Genevieve’s retreat; their growing attraction; the sensuous pool scene; ‘The Kiss’; the villain showing his true colours; the picnic where the appetite is for more than just food!!; the foiled kidnapping; the hero to the rescue; the invitation no hero could refuse; the confession and the quarrel; the dire situation with benefits; the friendly helping hand; two people head over heels in love; All’s Well That Ends Well!

Along the way I enjoyed…

Some delightful banter

(Richard is posing as Christopher Evans)

Mr. Evans, you are presumptuous”
His lips twitched. “Miss Barrett, you are correct.”
“Pray be presumptuous at a greater distance.”
His laugh was low and attractive. “How can I argue when you’re armed?”
She realized that she brandished the needle like a miniature sword. Despite her annoyance, the scene’s absurdity struck her and she choked back a laugh.

Some tender romantic moments

Then she felt the glance of Christopher’s little finger against hers. A brush, almost accidental. He touched her again. Such insignificant contact. Yet she felt it. In a strange way, as strongly as she’d felt those brazen caresses on the river.

Some hot sexy moments

Tonight, praise the Lord, her legs swiftly fell open. She was wet, gloriously, lusciously, sumptuously wet.
He pressed his forehead into her satiny shoulder and tested her with one finger, then two. Yes

Some funny moments

By Jove, he was in a bad way. The stickler who had scorned a hundred diamonds of the first water was head over heels with a woman who looked like she’d wrestled a mule through a landslide.

There is a rich array of secondary characters; Dr Barrett, Genevieve’s weak, selfish father, the villainous Lord Neville and the powerful , enigmatic Camden Rothermere, Duke of Sedgemoor (the hero of the next book). I also enjoyed seeing Jonas and Sidonie (Seven Nights in a Rogue’s Bed) and their daughter. I must mention Richard’s dog, Sirius, who plays an important part in this story and not forgetting the “pregnant elephant”!

The Epilogue is both heartfelt and touching and had me reaching for the tissues.

Enchanting, romantic, sexy and funny! This is definitely a keeper!

How I imagine Richard…

How I imagine Genevieve …

Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed (Sons of Sin, #1)

SONS OF SIN #1

Setting: Devon, England, 1826

Will a week of seduction…

Desperate to save her sister’s life, Sidonie Forsythe has agreed to submit herself to a terrible fate: Beyond the foreboding walls of Castle Craven, a notorious, hideously scarred scoundrel will take her virtue over the course of seven sinful nights. Yet instead of a monster, she encounters a man like no other. And during this week, she comes to care for Jonas Merrick in ways that defy all logic—even as a dark secret she carries threatens them both.

…Spark a lifetime of passionate surrender?

Ruthless loner Jonas knows exactly who he is. Should he forget, even for a moment, the curse he bears, a mere glance in the mirror serves as an agonizing reminder. So when the lovely Sidonie turns up on his doorstep, her seduction is an even more delicious prospect than he originally planned. But the hardened outcast is soon moved by her innocent beauty, sharp wit, and surprising courage. Now as dangerous enemies gather at the gate to destroy them, can their new, fragile love survive?

★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★

When Anna Campbell weaves the classic Beauty and the Beast theme into one of her intense, emotional, sensual stories, you know you’re in for a real treat!

When the wind caught her, she staggered. She fought to keep her footing on the slippery cobbles as she looked up, up, up at the towering black edifice before her.

Right from the very first pages, I was completely drawn into the story. The vivid images of the raging storm and forbidding Castle Craven created a wonderful sense of menace. I certainly shared Sidonie’s feelings of trepidation.

Now, even after their short acquaintance, she saw past the scarring to the man beneath.

If anyone is in need of tender loving care, it’s definitely the scarred, reclusive, tormented Jonas. Beneath all that arrogance and cynicism beats a vulnerable heart longing for acceptance and comfort. Discovering how he came to be scarred and the shame and rejection he felt at being declared a bastard was so heartrending.

Sidonie Forsythe was a jewel such as he’d never encountered.

I adore Sidonie. She’s intelligent, courageous and compassionate and spirited enough to stand up to Jonas. However misguided, I can understand her need to protect the sister who was like a mother to her when she was young.  She’s willing to look beyond Jonas’s outward appearance and see the honourable, tender, generous man he truly is.

The connection was perfect soul and body.

Ms Campbell certainly knows how to build and maintain the sizzling sexual tension between Jonas and Sidonie. I can only think of one word to describe the love scenes – WHEW!!!  Here’s a teaser:

She was panting when he caught her up against him. More kissing.  More fevered caresses. She crawled up his body and kissed him. Physical urgency overwhelmed caution. He opened his mouth, ravishing her with lips and tongue and teeth.

Of course, the path of true love doesn’t run smooth and there’s danger, betrayal and heartbreak before Jonas and Sidonie finally get their HEA and a charming Epilogue.

The book also serves as an introduction to Richard and Camden, Jonas’s Etonian friends and future heroes in this series. They’re both intriguing and I can’t wait to read their stories.

VERDICT: CLASSIC ANNA CAMPBELL – COMPELLING, EMOTIVE AND SENSUAL!

RATING:  ★★★★½
