(Kellington #2)

Genre: Erotic Historical Romance (Regency)

Official Blurb

A duke’s daughter isn’t supposed to court scandal in Regency England. She isn’t supposed to involve herself in controversial causes. And she most especially isn’t supposed to expect love in a ton marriage. But Lady Elizabeth isn’t just any duke’s daughter. She’s a Kellington. And her expectations are somewhat higher than most people’s.

Marcus Redmond, the Marquess of Riverton, has been in love with his best friend’s sister for years. When Lizzie’s reputation is damaged, he offers her marriage, hoping she will come to care for him. But can the upright, staid Riverton make a love match with the impulsive, passionate Lizzie – especially when there are those who are determined to come between them?

NEVER MISS A CHANCE is a sizzling romance with a touch of humor. It’s the second book in the Kellington series about the Duke of Lynwood and his four siblings. The series started with NEVER A MISTRESS, NO LONGER A MAID.

**4.5 Delightfully Entertaining Stars**

I loved this book and I’m really hooked on the Kellington series! Ms Driscoll blends all the right ingredients…a good helping of fascinating family dynamics; a generous measure of appealing characters, a good dash of delicious hotness and a soupcon of intrigue!

Lizzie is everything I adore in my heroines…intelligent, strong-willed, and capable and who could fail to like a heroine with such wit…

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m supposed to meet Rosalind.   I promise we’ll speak only of ribbons, balls and embroidery.   Unless you think even those subjects too controversial, then we’ll simply sit and become the empty-headed chits so clearly preferred by nincompoop men.”

I admire her stand against the equalities in society and determination to effect change by publishing her treatise on women’s rights. I love how she refuses to be intimidated by her brothers, even the overbearing head of the family, the Duke of Lynwood. I did think she was naïve in believing her actions would not earn her the disapproval and censure of the ton but, I did relish the verbal thrashing she gives the waspish-tongued Lady Gwendolyn Bossert in one scene. I also respected her for not wanting Marcus’ political career to suffer because of her reputation.

I felt so sorry for Marcus being saddled with such a dreadful family…a cold, calculating mother and two spoiled, self-absorbed sisters. He can see the sharp contrast between his family and the obvious love the Kellington siblings share.

Who would have thought that Marcus could have such red hot passions simmering just below that staid, predictable and dignified surface? He has loved Lizzie for a long time but, as the sister of his best friend, she is definitely off limits. So the poor guy has to suppress all these erotic thoughts which seem to fill his mind at the most inappropriate moments…

It was most certainly not the thing to have erotic thoughts about a friend’s sister, while supposedly engaged in conversation with the man about her welfare.

When Lizzie decides to discover if the very proper Marcus is capable of passion, she unleashes a sleeping tiger and a scene involving a rather wild interlude on the Duke of Lynwood’s desk… all conducted with her brothers just the other side of the door!

Although this book is categorised as erotic, I did not find it overly so and have rated it HOT.

What I love about this series is the wonderful sense of family. You know that, despite their bickering, when trouble brews the Kellingtons will make a united stand.

Once again, Ms Driscoll assembles a vivid cast of secondary characters.  I love the banter between the Kellington brothers, Liam, Arthur and Hal, and even the two harpies, as I call Marcus’ sisters, provide some funny moments with their bitchy remarks…

“Get out!” hissed Charlotte.
“Don’t take that tone with me,” said Edith, looking even more frightful than usual.   “I’m hardly the help.”
“I don’t care if you’re the King.   No one disturbs me from my rest.   I value my beauty sleep.   Something you wouldn’t understand
.”

It was nice to meet up with Ned and Jane again (Never a Mistress, No Longer a Maid) and their adorable daughter, Vi.

The mysterious Tara Rennard, who finds herself the object of Lord Arthur Kellington’s attentions, and the mystery of what is hidden in the lake provide an intriguing set up for the next book, Never Wager Against Love.

This is a delightful, entertaining romance and I’m really looking forward to spending more time with the Kellington siblings!

THE LUCKIEST LADY IN LONDON BY SHERRY THOMAS

Source: Bought from Amazon Kindle

Genre: Historical Romance (Victorian)

Official Blurb

Felix Rivendale, the Marquess of Wrenworth, is The Ideal Gentleman, a man all men want to be and all women want to possess. Felix himself almost believes this golden image. But underneath is a damaged soul soothed only by public adulation.

Louisa Cantwell needs to marry well to support her sisters. She does not, however, want Lord Wrenworth—though he seems inexplicably interested in her. She mistrusts his outward perfection and the praise he garners everywhere he goes. But when he is the only man to propose at the end of the London season, she reluctantly accepts.

Louisa does not understand her husband’s mysterious purposes, but she cannot deny the pleasure her body takes in his touch. Nor can she deny the pull this magnetic man exerts upon her. But does she dare to fall in love with a man so full of dark secrets, anyone of which could devastate her, if she were to get any closer?

Sherry Thomas is a much talked about author and I was keen to try her books. This is the first book in a new series and seemed like a good place to start.

NEVER TURN AWAY BY MAUREEN DRISCOLL

Source: Bought from Amazon Kindle

(Kellington #6)

Genre: Erotic Historical Romance (Regency)

Official Blurb

When Bow Street Inspector Joseph Stapleton is sent to Oxfordshire to help the daughter of an earl, little does he know how the mission will affect him personally.

Lady Evelyn Williams must marry within weeks, but she has never met a gentleman of the ton whom she would even consider as a potential husband. Then she encounters the brave, handsome man from London.

NEVER TURN AWAY is the story of a love that defies society’s expectations. It is the conclusion — for now — of the Kellington series of Regency romances.

ADVISORY: This book contains explicit language and adult situations. You won’t like this book if you don’t like either of those two things. It’s a little bit of history and a lot of explicit language and adult situations.

I needed this book to complete my Kellington series.

MARY’S CHRISTMAS KNIGHT BY MORIAH DENSLEY

Source: Bought from Amazon Kindle

Genre: Historical Romance (Victorian)

Official Blurb

Could a rogue be her knight in shining armor?

Mary Cavendish’s corset is already too tight. All the lovely Christmas food is tempting her, and that’s bad news for her dream of attracting a “knight on a white charger” — not that volunteering at the parish hospital is how she expects to meet him. Enter a mysterious Christmas Eve patient, who is none other than the famous Shakespearean actor Sir Wesley Samuel Darcy. Mary finds him arrogant, too forward… and maddeningly handsome.

When Mary learns Sir Wesley has been invited to spend Christmas with her family at Rougemont, she vows to resist the charming London rogue. Wesley thinks finding the perfect present for Miss Cavendish will tempt her — she’s not as prim as she pretends to be. Mary turned down six proposals last Season, and she’s not about to give in to a rake. But if Mary can’t resist the sugarplums, how can she resist the dashing Sir Wesley?

Moriah Densley is an author I have recently discovered and I decided to add this one to my Christmas reading.

SONG FOR SOPHIA BY MORIAH DENSLEY

Source: Bought from Amazon Kindle

(Rougemont #1)

Genre: Historical Romance (Victorian)

Official Blurb

To win a man’s heart, a woman must have the mind of a diplomat, a general, and Cleopatra, all in one.

Desperation has led Anne-Sophia Duncombe to a life of exile. Still, she is always just one mistake away from capture and a marriage she would rather die than endure. As a last resort to remain hidden from her former life, Sophia attempts a radical scheme; a life of humility and disguise.

Rumor has it Wilhelm Montegue, the Earl of Devon, is insane. A tormented war hero haunted by scandal, he is only tolerated because of his brilliant mind and swarthy good looks. His unmentionable “condition” which keeps him confined to his country home is also the source of his talent for composing music.

When a new housemaid is hired at Rougemont, Lord Devon is perplexed to find himself fascinated by her. He knows the exquisite beauty is keeping secrets but her siren’s voice draws him ever closer, and he can’t resist the intoxicating scent of danger surrounding her.

I couldn’t resist buying this as well at only £0.49.

★✩★✩★✩★✩★

I really enjoyed this book! It combined all the right ingredients; a lovely heroine, a worthy hero, lively repartee, delicious sensuality, a little intrigue and an array of interesting secondary characters.

What I love about Ned…

– his charm and wit
– his kindness and generosity to others regardless of their station in life
– his protectiveness towards those he loves and cares about
– his support and admiration for Jane
– his uncertainties about being a father
– a real romantic at heart but would never admit it

What I love about Jane…

– her determination to keep her child despite being disowned by her grandfather and ostracised by society
– her strength and resilience in the face of all her difficulties
– her unwavering love for her daughter Violet (Vi)
– her compassion, kindness and generosity to those who need her help
– her outspokenness and refusal to be brow-beaten, particularly by our hero

I enjoyed the development of the romance between Ned and Jane and their scenes together positively sizzle with sexual tension. Although the book is categorised as erotic, I didn’t find it overly so. The love scenes are definitely HOT on my sensuality rating but without being too graphic. Their road to happiness is a rocky one littered with obstacles but it all serves to push Ned and Jane into declaring their love for each other and treating me to a most satisfying happy ending.

Ms Driscoll has gathered together an interesting cast of secondary characters including Elizabeth, Ned’s independent and out-spoken sister, the rather austere Duke of Lynwood, Ned’s eldest brother, and the enchanting Violet who really captured my heart. The scenes between Ned and Vi are utterly delightful. I absolutely loved the teasing and light-hearted banter between the Kellington brothers.

I did notice a few modern words creeping into the dialogue but they certainly didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment of the story.

A few favourite quotes…

I hope you’re sewing the wound expeditiously and not creating an embroidery pattern as if amusing yourself on a winter’s day.”

“Do you have brothers and sisters?” Vi asked him.
“Three brothers and one sister.”
Vi’s eyes lit up. “I’d love to have three brothers and a sister. All I have is Titania.”
“Yes, but at least Titania catches mice. I’m afraid none of my brothers can catch mice, although I’m sure my sister is clever enough to do so.”
“What are their names?”
“The mice my sister catches? I’m not sure she ever named them.”
Vi broke out in giggles and Ned felt punched in the gut. He wasn’t sure he’d ever heard a sweeter sound.

“So, Ned, you nodcock,” said Lizzie as she poured herself and Jane a brandy, “what’s this about you getting engaged to a termagant with the fashion sense of a nearsighted opera dancer?”

This was Maureen Driscoll’s debut novel and the first book in her Kellington family series. Having read and enjoyed Never a Mistress, No Longer a Maid, I’m certainly keen to read the other siblings’ stories.

VERDICT: A VERY GOOD READ
