THIS BOOK WAS JUST AMAZING! Lorraine Heath weaves a beautiful, deeply emotional and moving story that is both heart-breaking and heart-warming.

I love how both Avendale and Rose are such multi-layered characters… far more than they first appear. Avendale seems to be a typical rake, indulging in a life of drinking, women and gambling, caring for nothing except his own personal needs, while Rose is a con-artist fleecing wealthy noblemen. But they each have secrets that have shaped them into the people they have become.

At the age of seventeen Rose ran away from an abusive father taking her younger brother Harry with her. She was forced to do whatever was necessary to support them and her small extended “family”. Avendale had chosen to bury his dark secret beneath a life of debauchery rather than face it head on. It has left him very much a loner, afraid of becoming emotionally involved.

I love how Ms Heath takes the time to build the romance between them showing the gradual changes in their relationship and the love growing. Here are some of my favourite moments.

It had been building between them from the moment she felt his gaze on her that first night, from the first word, the first assessing glance, the first touch.

Then all thoughts fled her mind as he slowly stroked a blunt-tipped finger along the inside of her upper arm, above the glove. Down. Up once more.

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “I’m not the caring sort so I’m at a loss here, Rose. Tell me what I can do to make it better.”

Within her, he ignited flames that began at the tips of her toes and rose ever upward.

Strange how, looking at her now, he experienced a flash of contentment, surrounded by this unusual assortment of people.

If Avendale and Rose are the heart of the book then Rose’s brother Harry is surely the soul. He totally captured my heart and his story is so poignant and heart-rending that I was reduced to floods of tears. Every time I think of the book he is writing, it brings a huge lump to my throat. It’s wonderful to see the genuine friendship that develops between Harry and Avendale and the scenes they share are some of my favourites. They also reveal so much about Avendale that he has kept hidden…his compassion, his caring nature and his generosity of spirit. I love how he gives Harry the opportunity to have so many amazing experiences. It was easy to fall in love with this Avendale. I also understood the driving force behind Rose’s actions…her overwhelming love for her brother. For this reason, I couldn’t condemn her even though her actions were morally wrong. After all, she only conned wealthy men who could well afford it!

I must mention Merrick, his wife Sally and Joseph, Rose’s unusual little band of servants and her stalwart supporters who add richness to the story.

In the Epilogue, the final entry in Avendale’s journal is both beautiful and romantic, but most moving are the last words which are from Harry’s book.

My Verdict: This is such a beautifully crafted and emotionally satisfying love story which really touches the heart. A MUST READ!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: AN INTERVIEW WITH LORRAINE HEATH

I’m thrilled to welcome NEW YORK TIMES Bestselling author LORRAINE HEATH to the Rakes and Rascals today for an exclusive interview.

Thank you, Carol. It’s such a treat to be here today. I love the questions you posed.

Could you tell us where you were born and what it was like growing up there?

Lorraine:
I was born in England, just north of London, but I came to Texas when I was 18 months old. I lived in Houston for several months and then we moved to Angleton, a small town south of Houston. My youth was comprised of going to Surfside Beach, fishing in nearby rivers, crabbing in the bay. We had a drive-in movie theatre and I remember watching Bambi there. Hurricane Carla blew it down in 1961 and it was never rebuilt. We went to a theatre in nearby town to watch movies but it was a very special “outing” and we only went once or twice a year. A mall on the outskirts of Houston was 45 minutes away. It was an all-day affair to drive that far to go shopping so we usually only went right before school started, although I sewed most of my clothes. I spent a lot of time in my room, making up stories in my head and watched a lot of TV.

This was Halloween in 1961…I’m the tall one.

R&R:
How would you describe yourself – temperamental or easy-going?

Lorraine:
Relatively easy-going unless the wrong buttons get pushed. I don’t like confrontation or anger so I strive to avoid them, although sometimes they can’t be avoided. I like for everyone to be happy and try to ensure that those around me are happy.

R&R:
When it comes to food do you like sweet or savoury or both?

Lorraine:
I like sweet when it comes to food. Desserts are the best!

R&R:
What is your most treasured possession?

Lorraine:
My mother’s wedding band. I inherited it after she passed away. I wear it on my right hand so I always feel as though she is still with me.

R&R:
If you were able to afford a second home anywhere in the world where would you choose and why?

Lorraine:
St. Augustine, FL. A few years back, I spent a week with a dear friend who had retired there and I just loved it. I loved the history, walking along the beach, and the relaxing atmosphere of the place.

Finally, what has been your most embarrassing moment?

Lorraine:
Seeing a friend I hadn’t seen in a while, exclaiming how excited I was that she was expecting … and then learning that she wasn’t expecting. I not only embarrassed myself but I embarrassed her, which made me feel even worse, and there is no way to undo that faux pas.

I loved this book! Lorraine Heath is a consummate storyteller and weaves a captivating and deeply emotional love story laced with delightful touches of humour.

Drake owes a debt of gratitude to the Duke and Duchess of Greystone who took him in off the streets, gave him a home and raised him as if he were their own son. He has always tried to make them proud of him but he has never felt that he really belongs in their world. Raised on the streets and the son of a convicted murderer hanged for his crime, Drake is constantly haunted by his sordid past. He believes his father’s tainted blood runs through his veins…that one day he won’t be able to control his temper and he will strike out with his fists just as his father had.

But no matter how far I journeyed, I could not escape my sordid beginnings. I could not be anything other than what I was born to be.

This belief is only reinforced by the haughty, spoiled Lady Ophelia Lyttleton who never misses an opportunity to rebuff him and remind him publically of his common origins. So when he rescues her from drowning in the Thames and discovers that she has lost her memory, he sees it as the perfect opportunity to exact revenge for all her slights…let her have a taste of what’s it is like to be a servant. So he leads her to believe that she is his housekeeper, a ruse he only intends to continue until he can find out why she was in the Thames and why no-one is looking for her. As the time passes, Drake sees a very different woman emerging…a woman who is “far too layered, far too intriguing, far too distracting”. He is reluctant to let her go but afraid of what might happen should she regain her memory.

Ms Heath does a wonderful job of transforming the dislikeable Ophelia into “Phee” whom I adored. Stripped of her memories, she is no longer constrained by the rigid rules instilled into her by her father or haunted by her dark, shameful secrets. She is free to be the woman she truly wants to be. Just as Drake sees a lady he has never seen before, so I saw a young woman who is warm, kind and compassionate; who has no hesitation in confronting a brute of a man who is abusing his horse or taking in stray animals; who finds contentment in her work and happiness in her life.

Even if she had all her memories, she doubted she’d recall a moment when she’d been happier.

Phee is able to see Drake for the first time with unprejudiced eyes…

A remarkable man with so much good in him, good he failed to recognize.

…a man who makes her feel safe and cherished.

Ms Heath develops the romance between Drake and Phee so beautifully and I loved every tender, poignant, sensual, passionate, funny, heart-warming and heart-breaking moment of it. There is one particularly memorable scene involving a bath tub, a bar of soap and a dragon tattoo which I guarantee will make you hotter than the steaming water in that tub!!

The scene where the Duke of Greystone gives Drake the specially engraved watch is so moving and when Drake calls him “father”, the tears were streaming down my face.

There is a wonderful Epilogue and Drake’s entry in his journal just tugs at the heart strings.

THE SCOUNDRELS OF ST. JAMES remains my favourite Lorraine Heath series and I have been looking forward to reading the stories of their offspring in SCANDALOUS GENTLEMEN OF ST. JAMES. The protagonists in the first book are Henry, Duke of Lovingdon, Olivia’s son from BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE and Lady Grace Mabry, Frannie and Sterling’s daughter from SURRENDER TO THE DEVIL.

I loved this book! Lorraine Heath weaves such a beautiful, deeply emotional and moving love story.

Lovingdon –

Lovingdon had once been a man above reproach but that was before he was totally devastated by the death of his wife and daughter from typhus. Lost in guilt, grief and remorse, he has become little more than a hollow shell…a hardened rake living a life of debauchery. My heart went out to Lovingdon. He had always been honourable and good but, when the two people he treasured the most were taken away, he felt that fate was in some way punishing him and I could understand his reactions perfectly.

I was brought up to believe that we were rewarded according to our behavior. Yet the Fates had conspired to punish me, to take away that which I treasured above all else, and I could find no cause for their unkind regard.
And so I said to hell with it all. I would sow the wild oats I had not in my youth. I would gamble, I would drink, I would know many women.

The pain and grief he suffered was so great, he knew he could never face that sort of loss again…he could never love again.

Lady Grace Mabry –

Grace is such a wonderful heroine…lovely, charming, kind but also bold, clever and determined.  She also drinks, steals her father’s cigars and cheats at cards. Hardly surprising given where her mother grew up and her associates!  She has also suffered a terrible loss, something known only to her immediate family but, rather than retreating from life like Lovingdon, she has chosen to embrace it. She dreams of marrying a man who truly loves her for herself, imperfections and all.

The romance between Grace and Lovingdon evolved so beautifully…full of poignant, heart-breaking and heart-warming moments and I’m sharing some of my favourites.

She was Lady Grace Mabry, lover of kittens, thief of biscuit tins , and climber of trees. What the devil was he doing thinking of her wrapped in silk sheets?

He could imagine it. Vividly. Too vividly. Her skin flushed with the fire of passion. Her lips plump from pressure. Her gaze smoldering with blazing desire. He imagined taking her mouth, burning his brand on her soul.

He wished he could reach past the shards of his broken heart and find a fragment of love that remained unclaimed that he could offer her, but she deserved so much more than a scrap. She was worthy of a whole of a heart and then some.

Dear God, he’d certainly felt dead these past two years. Until this marvelous woman had knocked on his bedchamber door . Until she challenged him and irritated him . Until she’d shown him what it was to want, to desire, to dream of something grand that would last a lifetime .

I don’t want to give too much away about the nature of Grace’s secret but I admire Ms Heath for introducing an issue which I have never seen in historical romance before. It added another layer to Grace’s character and the scene where she reveals her secret to Lovingdon and his acceptance of her was so moving.

I enjoyed the glass-blowing scene where Grace’s descriptions of the processes evoke all sorts of erotic thoughts in Lovingdon’s mind! I love the card game at Dodger’s Drawing Room, which introduces all the other ‘scandalous gentlemen’ and gives some insight into these future heroes of the series. It was a nice touch when Grace gives the password ‘Feagan’ to gain entry to the gaming hell…a reference to the ‘kidsman’ in the original series.

The other secondary characters that really stood out were Grace’s parents, Frannie and Sterling, who obviously love her very much. They never try to rein her in and are always supportive.

There is an emotional Epilogue and the final words Lovingdon writes in his journal are truly beautiful and romantic.

Once again, Ms Heath delivers a captivating and emotionally satisfying love story and I will certainly be reading the other books in the series. You don’t have to have read THE SCOUNDRELS OF ST. JAMES to enjoy this series but it would be a pity to miss such wonderful books.

How I imagine Lord Rafe Easton….

Nothing touched him, nothing bothered him. Nothing mattered.

I have been waiting for Rafe’s story and I knew it would be angsty. He was only ten years old, the youngest and most vulnerable of the three brothers who escaped that night and the one with the deepest emotional scars. His experiences have left him reclusive, cold and cynical; a man who cares for nothing or no one; a man with dark secrets he has never shared with anyone.

He’d been unable to stop thinking about her since he’d first seen her. She invaded his dreams, inhabited his thoughts, occupied his mind.

I loved watching Rafe trying so hard to deny his feelings for Eve when everything he does reveals just how much he really cares. He takes steps to return to her the sapphire necklace that her father bought for her nineteenth birthday and her father’s portrait. He always refuses to use his title but refers to himself as Lord Rafe Easton to get the respect Eve deserves from Madame Charmaine, the dressmaker. He never attends balls but is willing to take Eve to his brother’s ball simply because she wants to dance. Hardly the actions of a man who doesn’t care!

How I imagine Evelyn (Eve) Chambers…

She possessed a determination, a strength of will that would have had her finding a way to avoid the rookeries.

Eve was so naïve and vulnerable at first having been protected from the harsher realities of life by her father. After her initial distress, I admired her for coming to terms with the reality of her situation and it was satisfying to watch her grow in strength, confidence and determination.

“Mistresses are supposed to take what they’re given and not question it.”
“Is that the law? Is there a law of mistresses somewhere, a book that solicitors study?”

I smiled everytime she stood up to Rafe and particularly when she flaunted his rules for being a mistress.

I loved her determination to make Geoffrey pay for what he did to her and I positively cheered when she confronted him with her head held high. Better still was the scene where she ploughed her fist into his face!

Ms Heath built the sexual tension so well. When Rafe agreed to allow Eve time to adjust to him, it created a delicious sense of anticipation, particularly as Rafe has difficulty keeping his hands off her. My favourite scene is where Rafe finally allows Eve to touch him. There is something so beautiful and sensual about it.

He held her, just held her, while she held him.
Marveled at the wonder of it. So much skin against skin. Silk to satin. Velvety warmth.

Rafe has always struggled with feelings of anger and resentment towards his brothers for abandoning him. It was satisfying to finally see the seeds of reconciliation between Rafe, Sebastian and Tristan and, when Rafe is in danger, his brothers are prepared to do anything to find him. There is a lovely moment in the Epilogue when I knew that Rafe had finally come home.

Lord of Wicked Temptations delivered everything I look for in historical romance… emotional, sensual and romantic; the perfect end to this wonderful series.  Highly recommended!

This novella is the third book in Lorraine Heath’s excellent Lost Lords of Pembrook series. Whether it is a full length novel or a novella, Ms Heath never fails to captivate me with her stories.

Alistair was a secondary character in Lord of Temptation and I really liked him and hoped he would have his own HEA. He had such a strong sense of honour and duty. He blamed himself for his brother, Walter’s death in the Crimea and felt a deep obligation to fulfil Walter’s last request, to ensure the happiness of his fiancée, Lady Anne Hayworth. Alistair believed that marrying Anne was the best way of ensuring her happiness even though it meant giving up the woman he truly loved, Lady Meredith Hargreaves. Then, when he realised that Anne truly loved Tristan, he was willing to set her free and bear all the humiliation of being jilted. Now he is determined to do everything in his power to win Meredith back.
Hers were the only eyes into which he longed to gaze, hers the only fragrance he yearned to inhale, hers the only voice he wanted whispering near his ear as passion smoldered.

It is not going to be easy persuading the lady of his sincerity and there is one major impediment…she is betrothed to another man.

Meredith (Merry) had almost made the mistake of losing her heart to Alistair until his attentions moved onto someone else. She was deeply hurt but now she has moved on with her life and is engaged to Lord Litton who is without a doubt the man for her. She is determined never to fall under Alistair’s spell again.

…she refused to succumb to his charms once again. She could be distant, pretend indifference, give the impression that he had never been more than a dance partner.

Alistair is resolute in his pursuit of Merry and I love the ruse he uses so that he can dance with her. Merry’s defences begin to crumble when things get rather heated in the billiard room. Who would have thought that Alistair could be so sexy!

It is not until a snow storm forces them to spend the night in the ruined Pembrook castle that they are finally able to admit their true feelings. This leads to a sweet and tender love scene. Once again, Alistair’s actions show what a perfect hero he is. It would be easy for him to be found with Merry, forcing her to marry him, but instead he protects her reputation, giving her the freedom to choose her own course.

To have her, he would have to ruin her, and he loved her far too much for that.

I thought Ms Heath disposed of Litton, the only obstacle remaining to their happiness, in a rather clever and believable way, leaving Merry to follow her heart. As always, Ms Heath left me with a sigh and a happy smile on my face.

You don’t have to wait until Christmas to read this enchanting rekindled love story. Like me read it any time of the year as part of this wonderful series.
