Official Blurb

A seductive beauty turns the tables on a gentleman gaming for the guiltiest of pleasures in this rich and sensual Regency romance from beloved newcomer Cecilia Grant.

The Waterloo hero had his own daring agenda for the gaming tables of London’s gentlemen’s clubs. But now he antes up for a wager of wits and desire with Lydia, the streetwise temptress who keeps him at arm’s length.

A kept woman in desperate straits, Lydia has a sharp mind with a head for numbers. She gambles on the sly, hoping to win enough to claim her independence. An alliance with Will at the tables may be a winning proposition for them both. But the arrangement involves dicey odds with rising stakes, sweetened with unspoken promise of fleshly delights. And any sleight of hand could find their hearts betting on something neither can afford to risk: love.

A WOMAN ENTANGLED BY CECILIA GRANT

Source: Paperback bought with an Amazon Gift Card

(Blackshear Family #3)

Genre: Historical Romance (Regency)

Official Blurb

An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant’s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel.

Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won’t get her into London’s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon—all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face—albeit a maddeningly handsome one—appears bent on upsetting her scheme.

Implored by Kate’s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter’s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he’s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned—though policing her won’t abate Nick’s desire. Reckless passion leads to love’s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart.

HIGHLAND PLEASURES # 5

Setting: Scotland 1884

Juliana St. John was raised to be very proper. After a long engagement, her wedding day dawns—only for Juliana to find herself jilted at the altar.

After escaping brutal imprisonment, Elliot has returned to Scotland a vastly wealthy yet tormented man. Now Juliana has her hands full restoring his half-ruined manor in the Scottish Highlands and trying to repair the broken heart of the man some call irredeemably mad. Though beautiful and spirited, Juliana wonders if that will be enough to win a second chance at love.

★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★✩★

This is the 5th book in Jennifer Ashley’s amazing HIGHLAND PLEASURES  series. I love all the books in this series and THE SEDUCTION OF ELLIOT MCBRIDE is a wonderful addition. It’s a beautiful, sad, heart-rending, poignant, romantic, funny, sensual, and heart-warming story.

Elliot is such a tortured hero. My heart ached for all he’d endured at the hands of his captors; the abuse, the torture, the deprivation, the dehumanisation. Only thoughts of Juliana sustained him; she was his secret, his soul, the only thing that kept him sane.

My heart ached for all the mental torment he still endured – the dreams, the waking terrors, the darkness when time passed and he knew nothing of it. His love for Juliana and his desperate need to keep her by him was so poignant.

How I imagine Elliot ~

I adored Juliana; her strength, her determination, her compassion, her practicality. She’s perfect for Elliot. Just the sound of her voice can bring Elliot back from the darkness. She believes in him even when others doubt his sanity.

How I imagine Juliana ~

Wow! There were some pretty hot love scenes. I’m glad Juliana wasn’t the ‘will it fit’ type virgin but embraces Elliot’s lovemaking with enthusiasm.

Why a goblet of whiskey? I suggest you read the book for the answer!

There were some great secondary characters. One of my favourites was Elliot’s old curmudgeon of an uncle, McGregor. Whether he was shooting up the castle or telling the odious Mrs Dalrymple “You’re talking through your ass” , I adored him.

Daniel Mackenzie is becoming a firm favourite of mine and I loved the funny scene where Elliot recruits Daniel to help him sell the jumble at the fȇte. They prove the perfect double act and add some light relief!

“A pen wiper, dear lady,” Daniel said, holding up a round piece of knitting for a woman with a basket on her arm. “Why not two, or three? Ye have more than one pen, surely.”
“A glass vase, lad,” Elliott said to the young man. “To put wildflowers in for your lady. Ye can barely see the crack here. Ye fill this with flowers from yon meadow, and she’ll be baking ye oatcakes in no time.”

There’s mystery, blackmail and danger afoot but, ultimately, this story belongs to Elliot and Juliana, a couple who truly deserve their happiness.
