Cast into a world of black, Declan Carstairs is a man in torment. Consumed by guilt, he sees no way out of the darkness his life has become. Only one thing drives him—finding the woman who caused his brother’s death, and the accident that took his sight.
Housekeeper Chloe Daniels refuses to pity her devastatingly gorgeous boss, but treating him as the strong, capable man he is soon proves dangerous. As Chloe falls deeper under Declan’s spell, awakened by his touch, she forgets all about the secret she keeps that may destroy them both.
This is my first book by Australian author Annie West and it definitely won’t be my last! She really impressed me with this intense, emotional, sensual and totally engrossing story.
How I imagine Declan Carstairs…
Declan more than fulfils my weakness for tormented, irascible heroes. He hides all his vulnerabilities – the frustrations, the insecurities, the guilt and the anger – behind a show of arrogance, sarcasm and rudeness.
Even though, to some extent, I can understand his reasoning, I really hate the cruel way he treats Chloe when he discovers her true identity. The saying ‘there’s none so blind as those who will not see’ seems very apt. Even with his eyesight restored, Declan is still too blind to recognise the truth in what Chloe tells him. He lets his head rule his actions rather than his heart. Some serious grovelling was called for to restore my belief that he truly deserves Chloe’s love but he does come up trumps in the end.
How I imagine Chloe Daniels…
I love Chloe! She’s strong, determined, capable and resilient but with a natural warmth. She’s perfect for Declan because she doesn’t pity him and refuses to kowtow to him…
“Where’s your sympathy for the poor maimed invalid?”
“Probably the same place your manners are.”
I admired her for walking away from Declan even though she loves him; for refusing to accept anything less than she deserved – a man who trusted and believed in her.
Ms West captures all the nuances of their growing relationship – their thoughts and emotions – and I love how she gradually builds the sexual tension between them:
their initial attraction…
A shiver of sensation skated up her arm and shoulder, raising the fine hairs on her nape.
She was soft, lithe and warm as his arms instinctively closed around her. The unexpectedness of contact momentarily stunned Declan, but a second later his body was responding to the intimate contact.
their first kiss…
Their kiss was lush, slow and thorough. A mating of mouths that sent thoughts spiralling out of control and senses tumbling.
the final surrender…
Sparks of heat flared in a twisting coil as his words curled around her. Her lips parted, tingling, as if waiting for the caress of his mouth.
“You’d look more beautiful without the wrap,” he murmured. “Take it off.”
The sheer wanton thrill of his words stifled thought. He seduced her just with that rich growl that scraped like cut velvet across aroused flesh.
“Now, Chloe. I want you naked.”
Carinya had been his family’s spectacular Blue Mountains retreat for generations
I have been on a diet of Historical Romances recently and so it was refreshing to find myself back in the 21st century. I love the Australian setting and Ms West’s evocative writing.
Fantastic characters and a wonderful romance make UNDONE BY HIS TOUCH a great read.
